Rooibos, Green bosch & Honeybush
Rooibos, Green bosch & Honeybush are 3 “Red” South African teas with fantastic health benefits. Rooibos (pronounced ROY-boss) & Green bosch are harvested from the same plant, however the Green Rooibos or Green bosch is processed differently to prevent oxidation so that it has considerably higher levels of anti-oxidants & nutrients.
Honeybush is not the same plant, however shares many of the same health benefits.
All 3 are naturally caffeine free & low in tannin (the tannin in tea can inhibit the absorption of minerals). They are also rich in antioxidants & nutrients & have an anti-inflammatory effect. Rooibos is reported to contain 50% more antioxidants than green tea. Amongst these are aspalathin (found only in rooibos) & nothofagin, which have been shown to have powerful anti-inflammatory & cancer-fighting properties. It also boosts glutathione which is our master antioxidant in our body.
Aspalathin also works to increase glucose uptake & has been found to help balance blood sugar levels.
Rooibos contains quercetin which is a lovely anti-inflammatory & beneficial for preventing & treating allergies with an anti-histamine like effect. Rooibos has also been used historically to soothe colicky babies, relieve teething gums & promote better & deeper sleep.
Other health benefits include improved cholesterol, blood pressure & circulation; healthy skin & hair; supports digestion; strengthens bones & alleviates aches & pains.
Honeybush also contains phytoestrogens and is beneficial in the treatment of menopausal symptoms. Research indicates that it may help prevent some cancers & sun damage & has a calming effect on the nervous system.
